Helmet Information
Safety and Cycling
Generally cycling is a safe and enjoyable pastime but it is
always wise to make sure that you think of your personal
safety and use recommended safety and security equipment.
Bicycle Helmets
The wearing of a bicycle helmet is not law but it is always a good idea to wear one. Always make sure that you look at the helmet for its CE standard (CE EN1078) – they should not be on the shelves without this.
Vents
Helmets of varying prices can often be distinguished by the number of vents it has. Your head can get very warm if you wear a helmet with few vents in it, whereas if you invest a little more the airflow will be greater and the comfort factor will increase.
Note: Some people believe that the more vents there are the less rigid the structure of the helmet, causing the protection to be minimalised – this is not the case.
Always wear your helmet correctly
Put the helmet on with the front and back level and parallel to the ground. Your helmet should not be tilted forward as this may obscure your vision and leave the back of your head unprotected and conversely if it is tilted backwards you lose your front protection.
Always remember
The helmet is there to offer protection and it will reduce the risk of injury but it does not eliminate injury. It is not something that you can put on and become invincible. Wear the helmet, protect yourself but always remember to ride carefully.
